The European Day of Sustainable Communities on 21st September 2019 is a celebration of local communities taking action for a zero-carbon, regenerative and inclusive Europe.
All communities and citizens who are catalysing transformation in the face of ecological and climate breakdown are invited to become co-creators of the day.
Last year communities in 24 countries joined the celebration! Events included conferences, open days, apple harvests, tours, concerts and shared meals. Check out the gallery below for an overview of the diversity of activities.
In 2019 communities are invited to organise an event if possible on the 21st September or otherwise between 14th and 28th September.
To mark the day, ECOLISE, the main organiser of #EDSC19, has a short booklet on community-led action in Europe, ‘Local, community-led: a new future unfolding’. You can read and download it here.
Community-led climate action is the great untold story of the global response to the climate and ecological crisis. It’s time to start sharing this amazing work!
There are many thousands of community initiatives across Europe – renewable energy cooperatives, community farms and gardens, ecological housing projects and many more.
All the research shows that such initiatives are highly effective in reducing ecological footprints, building social capital and enhancing local economies. And yet they are largely on the edge of mainstream society.
#EDSC aims to give these initiatives the profile they deserve. It aims to build support from policy makers and to inspire the wider public.
It also provides a moment for communities to celebrate their work, knowing that they are part of a growing wave of transformative action.
Plan your event for September 2019! From June 2019 registration will be open and you are invited to register your event here on this website. That way you become a co-creator of the day, and your event appears on the #EDSC map.
